Risto & Lauri: Bänditreenit (C25) (self released) (3€/4€ with postage)
Tapestry artist Risto Martikainen and Lauri Puttonen, then monastery worker met in spring 2008 at Orthodox Monastery of New Valamo, Heinävesi, Finland. it emerged that both like playing various kind of instruments on their own way. Soon they had sessions at Risto's home, nearby monastery. Lauri taped the "band rehearsals" and selected some spontaneously improvised pieces for this cassette release.
Pieces on this 25+min set are enjoyable all the way from "Eka" (First) to "Vika" (Last) track. Air is filled with joyous lo-fi dictaphone sound with broken guitars, recorder, bouzouki, rattling cans, mandolin, jouhikko and such. Maybe the most stunning moments are when Risto starts to sing on his unique voice on b-side's first track "Jouhikko & omega3". Other highlights are his wonderful recorder playing on "Eka" and strangely experimental guitar playing under seemingly accidental, wonderful tape sounds on "Vika". "Kreikkalaista" (Greekish) has great bouzouki groove and "Pitkästä aikaa blues" (Long time no seen -blues), "Ihmiset tykkää blues" (People like -blues) and "Ilman nuotteja blues" (Without notes -blues) are sunny ugri-country blues numbers. There's also some sympathetic chat between the takes.
